Junior Coaching Academy
The Academy runs from 1st April to 31st October with two sessions on Tuesday evening, two on Thursday evening and three on Saturday morning. On Wednesday evening we have team training and a 9 hole competition. Cost per lesson is £3 for the 4 to 7 age group and £4 for the 8 to 14 age group. 70 juniors participated in 2011.
We coach junior boys and girls from the age of 4 up to 15 in group lessons. Juniors over the age 15 are encouraged to have one-to-one lessons. We put them into groups relating to their age so that we can structure the lesson appropriately. We have 16 pupils per group with two PGA professionals taking the lessons. The lessons last an hour and consist of technical work, games, competition and playing on the golf course. Our objective is to teach the skills in a fun environment.
In the Academy our aim is to take pupils from total beginners to eventually playing on the course, get a handicap and play in competitions. We also run competitions every Friday throughout the season for juniors with handicaps and juniors without handicaps.
Juniors with handicaps play from the men’s medal tees and play for Trophies, Cups and Medals. For the juniors without handicaps we give them an unofficial handicap which allows them to play on the course and gain experience. For those with unofficial handicaps we have different tee boxes for different ability levels, these are as follows:
- Red tee boxes = 100 yards away from the hole
- White tee boxes = 150 yards away from the hole
- Blue tee boxes= 200 yards away from the hole
This is a shortened course for the unofficial handicap golfers and they play 9 holes from the selected tee boxes. Once the golfer is comfortable playing from the junior blue tees he/she is then moved back to the ladies tees then onto the men’s yellow tees to eventually playing off the medal tees.
So the path is Beginner to Beginner aiming to get on the course to Unofficial handicap 9 hole competition to Handicap to Junior and Mens competitions to Junior Team player.
And the result? Stewart Fell progressed through our Junior Academy to become a scratch golfer and , aged 20, won the trophy for the best nett score of 69 in the Newcastle and District Golf League in 2011. Tynemouth Golf Club Juniors won the 2011 Northumberland Junior League for the second time in four years
Get into Golf
This programme is part funded by Golf County Partnership and encourages the 16+ age group to be introduced to the basics of golf through six lessons. Instruction is given in small groups. The programme is open to individuals and to organisations where we have worked with, for example, the Womens Institute, HMRC and Northumbria Police.
This funded programme supports our Professionals going into schools to teach the basics of golf, encouraging the schools to place golf lessons on the curriculum and to bring groups of students to the golf course.
